THE SEATTLE SYMPHONY AND SOUND TRANSIT RENAME UNIVERSITY STREET STATION TO SYMPHONY STATION
RENAMING CEREMONY TAKES PLACE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2024, AT 11 A.M. AT BENAROYA HALL
Seattle, WA — A renaming ceremony will be held at the Second avenue entrance of University Street Station, located under Benaroya Hall, home to the Seattle Symphony, between Second and Third avenues on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 11 a.m. The ceremony celebrates the renaming of University Street Station to Symphony Station. The station is being renamed to provide better wayfinding for customers and to avoid confusion with University of Washington Station and U-District Station.
During the ceremony, remarks will be given by Seattle Symphony President & CEO Krishna Thiagarajan, King County Executive Dow Constantine, Seattle Deputy Mayor Greg Wong and Sound Transit CEO Goran Sparrman, and followed by the unveiling of the Symphony Station signage. A special performance by Seattle Symphony musicians will close the ceremony.
“We are excited to work with Sound Transit to rename the light rail station that sits just below Benaroya Hall to Symphony Station, after our Grammy Award-winning orchestra,” said Krishna Thiagarajan, President & CEO of the Seattle Symphony. “For over 25 years, Benaroya Hall has not only been the home to the Seattle Symphony, but has served as a gathering place for the entire community. As the most visited performance arts venue in Seattle, Benaroya Hall attracts thousands of people week after week to the heart of downtown to experience the Seattle Symphony in addition to a wide variety of artistic and cultural events from all parts of our diverse community. We value our strong relationship with Sound Transit as we are all engaged in bringing people together to experience unforgettable events!”
“The debut of Symphony Station, coinciding with the onset of the Seattle Symphony’s 2024/2025 season, both increases clarity for Sound Transit passengers and celebrates downtown Seattle’s cultural resources, attractions that draw riders from throughout our region and the world,” said Goran Sparrman, Sound Transit Interim CEO.
